It will play host to the 22nd Winter Olympiad as well as the Paralympic Winter Games for the first time in 2014. Construction is under way to host different events – fifteen major winter sports will consist of over 90 different events. Many new venues are being built in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana as well as in the Imeretin Valley.
Cities are chosen well in advance so that they have enough time to put infrastructure in place, to host the games. Cities usually lobby the IOC to host the games – Sochi was picked over Guatemala City.
